WaterlOx Original Marine Finish
Description Waterlox Original Marine Finish is a clear, high gloss finish coat, which penetrates wood enabling it to resist moisture, the harmful UV rays of the sun, salt, and fresh water exposure, and heat and cold.
Uses Waterlox Original Marine Finish is recommended as a finish coat for all exterior wood surfaces, such as marine furniture, paneling, all boat woodwork, exterior furniture, doors, railings, and fences. When used in combination with Waterlox Original Sealer/Finish, Waterlox Original Marine Finish renders a hand-rubbed appearance in a high gloss sheen. Not recommended for pressure-treated lumber.
Preparation of Surfaces Apply to a small test area and allow to dry prior to applying to the entire surface. Final color effect is always influenced by the grain, texture, porosity, species of wood, number of coats, and method of application.
Waterlox can be applied directly over previously oiled wood. If the previous finish is a urethane or unknown, the finish must be abraded before application. Sand the surface well and wipe clean with a tack cloth or cloth dampened with paint thinner. Where not possible to strip all wood and apply a coat of Waterlox Original Sealer/Finish or Waterlox Marine Sealer as a first coat.
Application Application methods include lambswool, brush, or cloth. Sanding between coats is not necessary for adhesion purposes. For aesthetic reasons, however, you can perform a light sanding with fine sandpaper or bronze wool (0000) or buff with a 3M® white pad.
Coverage One gallon of Waterlox Original Marine Finish covers 400 square feet per gallon per coat (100 square feet per quart). Thinning is not necessary.
Recoat-ability Once the gloss level of the film begins to fade it is time to re-coat the surface. Sanding down to bare wood is not necessary. Simply clean the surface, recoat with more Waterlox Original Marine Finish, and allow to dry.
Dry Time After each coat has been applied, allow to air dry for 6-24 hours, or until tack-free. Dry time depends on temperature, ventilation, and humidity. For best results apply when temperatures are over 60°F and when humidity is relatively low. Low temperatures or high humidity will increase dry time.
Clean Up/Storage Use mineral spirits or turpentine to clean tools, equipment, applicators, and spills. Then wash with warm soapy water. Transfer unused Waterlox Original Marine Finish to smaller, tightly sealed jars or raise the level in the original container by adding clean marbles or stones. This is to prevent the potential gelling of contents due to air exposure within the can.
